London which is the most populated city in England and all of the UK stands beside the River Thames. The city of London is nearly two thousand years old, the settlement dates to the Romans, who founded a settlement called Londinium.
London's venerable core, the City itself, is largely retained within its one square-mile (2.9 km2) ancient boundaries. In 2011, it had a population of less than seven thousand four hundred, which makes it the least inhabited England city.
Since the 1800s, the designation London has referred to its metropolis, which was developed around this core. Greater London forms the main part of the municipality; the Mayor and an Assembly govern this region. The core of the city also includes counties, although historically was split into the City and Essex, Middlesex, Kent, Hertfordshire and Surrey.
London, a leading international city has strengths in commerce, the arts, entertainment, education, finance, fashion, media, healthcare, research and development, professional services, tourism, as well as transportation, with all contributing a prominent role in the UK global economy. Depending on how it is measured, London's financial centre has the world's fifth or sixth largest GDP considering its metropolitan area.
When measuring passenger traffic and international arrivals, London has the largest city airport system and boasts the most visits of any of the world's cities. It is considered a dominant investment destination because of its ability to attract the most international retailers and ultra-wealthy clients compared to all other cities.
London's forty-three universities compose the largest consolidation of institutes for higher education in Europe; furthermore, a report released in 2014 places London first among the world's university rankings.
A report also ranks London first in the world's design & development of multimedia, software and technological readiness.
In 2012 London was the first city to host a modern Summer Olympics three times.
