Leicester Information

Leicester is a metropolis and unitary governmental area situated in the East Midlands. It is the county town of Leicestershire and has a population in excess of 300,000 people. The city is situated on the River Soar and is adjacent to the National Forest.

The city is one of the oldest in England with at least 2,000 years history dating back before the Roman occupation to the Iron Age. The area was well occupied by the Romans and subsequently in the Dark Ages by Danish Vikings at which time it became one of 5 well-developed Dane Law towns. It is recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Ledecestre'. During the pre-modern period, the city was a market settlement however the Industrial Revolution brought about swift unexpected development.

In the 19th century the new canal network and railways brought about substantial industrial growth. Since then Leicester has housed a large assortment of manufacturers particularly those involved in hosiery production, engineering and shoemaking.

Leicester is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the UK with immigrants making up about 40% of the city population. The community includes Poles, Irish, and Asians from Kenya and Uganda who were expelled from their homeland. Since the enlargement of the EU, a significant number of Eastern Europeans have taken up residence in Leicester.

King Richard III who died in battle and was buried in a local church before being discovered below the tarmac of a city centre car park in Leicester is now entombed in the Cathedral.
