Glasgow Information

Glasgow is the largest metropolitan area in Scotland and is ranked 3rd largest in the UK after London and Birmingham. The Glasgow metropolis has a population of well over 1,000,000 residents. Glasgow has the largest population density of all Scottish metropolitan areas. The city is positioned on the River Clyde in Scotland’s West Central Lowlands. The individuals living in Glasgow are identified as Glaswegians.

This large urban industrialised area originated from a small pastoral commune on the River Clyde to eventually become the prime seaport of Britain. The city emerged slowly over centuries from the medieval district and imperial burgh and with the university being established during the 15th century, it became the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment period in the course of the 18th century.

During the Industrial Revolution Glasgow and the local area converted into one of the worlds centres of engineering, textiles and chemicals. It was most notable in the ship building and nautical engineering industry resulting in the construction of revolutionary vessels. The metropolis was declared the "Second City of the British Empire" for the period of the Edwardian period and the Victorian era.

In the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum, Glasgow was one of the 4 out of 32 electoral areas that voted in favour of independence. Succeeding the referendum the SNP won every constituency in the city at the 2015 General Election.
