Watford Information

Watford is a town in Hertfordshire situated inside the M25 motorway 27 km North West of London. The town developed on land along the road leading from a ford on the River Colne which was owned by the Abbey of St Albans until the sixteenth century. St Mary's Church was built in the 12th century and the operation of a market began a modest growth of the settlement which was frequented by travellers on their way to the palace at Kings Langley and Berkhamsted Castle.

During the sixteenth century, a great house was built in Cassiobury, which was partially rebuilt in the seventeenth century, while another significant house was constructed in The Grove. The opening of the Grand Junction Canal in 1798 along with the 1837 opening of the London & Birmingham railway assisted the town's growth, coupled with the establishment of paper mills and print works which continue to this day.

Two large-scale industrial brewers Sedgwicks and Benskins once flourished there, but closed late in the twentieth century. Contemporary Watford has transformed into a regional centre. Several national and multinational companies have office headquarters in Watford.

An 80-hectare complex belonging to Warner Brothers (WB) film studio is situated in Leavesden, which is used for many wide-ranging film projects and productions. A portion of the studio site houses a tour “The Making of Harry Potter” that is open to the public and displays many of the sets and costumes from the film.
