Telford Information

Telford is a 'new town', created by the merger or consolidation of smaller settlements in a contrived plan in the 1960s and 70s. This town's conception utilised former agricultural and industrial land and small towns including Dawley, Madeley, Wellington and Oakengates to establish the new town with inhabitants mostly from Wolverhampton and Birmingham. The town is situated within the Telford & Wrekin borough in Shropshire approximately 20 km East of the town of Shrewsbury and nearly 50 km West of the town of Birmingham. The town is linked to the M6 motorway by the M54 motorway.

Telford is the largest town in Shropshire with an estimated population in excess of 150,000 residents; the entire borough has an estimated population of 170,000 inhabitants. Telford is probably the United Kingdom's fastest growing town.

Telford's main Shopping Centre is situated in a contemporary mall built in the geographical centre of the new town. The town centre has recently received development grants from central government to improve facilities including pedestrianisation and construction of new cafes, bars and shops.

The town's proximity to Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO Heritage site and major tourist attraction and Coalbrookdale allows the town to advertise itself as 'The Birthplace of Industry'. This area is recognised internationally as an important contributor to and birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

The name of the town is intended to honour Thomas Telford the foremost civil engineer of his day who was appointed Surveyor of Public Works for Shropshire in 1787.
