Taunton Information

Taunton is the county town for Somerset. The town has an estimated population of nearly 65,000. Taunton lies on the River Tone between the Quantock, Blackdown and Brendon hills in an area known as the Vale of Taunton. The name of the town means, Tone Town or 'Town on the Tone River'.

Tauntons military and religious history goes back over 1,000 years and includes a monastery from the tenth century and Taunton Castle with origins in the Anglo-Saxon period which would later become the site of a priory. The Normans thereafter build a stone castle that belonged to the Bishops of Winchester which now houses the Somerset Military Museum and the Museum of Somerset.

The completion of various transportation links played a central role in the town's economic development including the Great Western Canal that came to Taunton in 1839 and the railway in 1842.

The town is the home to 40 Commando, the Royal Marines, Musgrove Park Hospital, County Grounds, UK Hydrographic Office and Somerset County Cricket Club. The town is part of the West Country Carnival circuit and it has hosted the Taunton Flower Show in Vivary Park since 1866.

At some point before the Taunton portion of the Domesday Survey, it had become privileged as a borough with some royal and religious favour after King Edward's charter for the 'Men of Taunton' in 904 AD.

Taunton has received funding for large scale regeneration projects as a strategically important town under the governments Regional Spatial Strategy including regeneration of the areas of Firepool, Tangier, the Retail town centre, the cultural quarter, and the River Tone.
