Southampton Information

Southampton which is a major UK port on the South coast is the largest city within Hampshire. It is 121 kilometres (km) South West of London with Portsmouth 31 km further to the South East.

Southampton is at the north-most point in Southampton Water and lies at the confluence of the River Itchen and the River Test, with the River Hamble meeting at a point further south of the city's urban area.

The local City Council is a unitary authority that represents the region of Greater Southampton, which has a population of more than 1.5 million, though the urban area of the city only has 250,000 residents. The 1.5 million resident population make it a metropolitan area ranking among the most populated in the UK. These residents are referred to as Sotonians because Southampton is often abbreviated as 'Soton' or So'ton when written.

Some of the largest employers are The University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University, Ordnance Survey, Southampton Airport, BBC South, Associated British Ports, Carnival UK and the National Health Service.

Southampton is an old port city associated with the RMS Titanic and is the home port to some of the world's biggest cruise ships.

Southampton's West Quay is a large retail park and shopping centre which was one of Europe's largest shopping complexes when it originally opened in the city centre. Further development is called West Quay Watermark. This will add to the citys allure as a top destination for shopping in the South of England.
