Simon is a senior associate in financial services litigation.
Simon qualified as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1999,
and spent over six years working as a commercial litigator in two of New Zealand's top law firms.
He has also worked for over two years advising on investigations within the Enforcement
Division of the Financial Services Authority. Simon qualified as a solicitor in England and
Wales in 2006.
Simon's early years of practice involved advising on banking, insolvency and professional
negligence claims. He has acted in relation to a number of substantial commercial
disputes, including for multi-national corporations, and advised clients in relation to a
range of commercial disputes. Simon has significant experience of litigation and
alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation.
Simon has acted on behalf of clients involved in disputes relating to complex commercial
contracts, joint ventures, fiduciary duties, and prejudiced shareholders.
He is also experienced in obtaining urgent interim relief.
Simon has extensive experience in relation to the Financial Services and Markets Act
2000, particularly investigations by the Enforcement Division of the FSA. He has advised
in relation to investigations relating to the sale of insurance, including PPI (payment
protection insurance), the sale of mortgages, retail stock-broking, and financial promotions,
as well as insider dealing and market abuse.
He has a background in finance and has authored a guide to the law on business and
property valuations.
Simon joined City Law in January 2008 and he is advising in International Arbitration
proceedings relating to pension mis-selling claims consequent upon the disposal of
shareholding interests in a UK Regulated Life company. He is also involved in claims
in connection with the failure to pay redemptions by offshore Hedge Funds including
a successful claim for redemptions by one off shore hedge fund against another
(SV Special Situations Fund Limited v. Headstart Class F Holdings Limited (2008)).
In addition to watching almost any form of sport, Simon enjoys running, triathlon, touch rugby, skiing, and barbecuing.
