Recent Amendments to the Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007

19/01/2010

With effect from 1 March 2010, changes made to Rule 2.05 of the Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007 shall become effective.

The changes made will mean that clients will have to be informed in writing at the outset of the retainer that:

  • clients are entitled to complain about their bill.

  • if all or part of the bill remains unpaid, the firm will be entitled to interest on the unpaid amount.

  • there may be a right to raise objections to the bill with either the Legal Complaints Service or the Office for Legal Complaints or to apply to the court to assess the bill under Part III of the Solicitors Act 1974.
