Gambling news: Tasmania "white listed"
16/01/2008
Following the government's announcement in August 2007 that Alderney and the Isle of Man were allowed to advertise remote gambling in the UK, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport ("DCMS") recently announced that Tasmania will also be joining the gambling "white list", with effect from 31 January 2008.
Under the Gambling Act 2005, operators are prohibited from advertising gambling in the UK unless they are licensed in the EEA, Gibraltar or one of the "white listed" countries or jurisdictions. (For further information, see City Law update "Gambling News: advertising 'white list' announced" dated 16/08/07.)
The DCMS also announced that the "white list" applications of Kahnawake (Canadian reservation) and Antigua have been refused, following careful assessment of their respective representations against the published criteria.
In conclusion, if an operator is licensed in a country or jurisdiction outside the EEA (including Gibraltar), Alderney, Isle of Man or Tasmania, it will be prohibited from advertising gambling in the UK.
