Gaming law news: Antigua "white listed"

11/11/2008

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport recently announced that, with effect from 21 November 2008, Antigua and Barbuda is joining the gambling "white list" of countries and jurisdictions allowed to advertise gambling in the UK pursuant to the Gambling Act 2005.

The white list now includes countries within the EEA (Gibraltar included), Alderney, Isle of Man, Tasmania and Antigua.

Antigua's application was originally rejected by the UK Gambling Commission in January 2008 but was reconsidered following further representations made by the Antigua government to the UK Secretary of State.

Evidently, it was able to demonstrate the high standards required for whitelisting purposes aimed at preventing gambling from becoming a source of crime, keeping gambling fair and open and protecting vulnerable people including children.
